Location and Excursions

Phetchabun is an off the beaten track, rural Thai province with stunning countryside and few tourists. If you want to experience the real Thailand away from the tourist traps, this is it! Battle Conquer camp is situated just a few minutes drive from the foot of the Phetchabun hills and there’s a huge lake very close by. Most guests like to run or walk through the countryside, take a plunge in the cool lake and heading out for a refreshing swim. On a Saturday guests like to chill out and order food and drinks to be brought to them by boat out into the lake.

Here are some examples of local excursions:

The Buddha Run
Take the Battle Conquer challenge of climbing three hundred steep steps to a hillside temple set in a cave as many times as you can in one hour or simply relax once you reach the top taking in the magnificent views!

Walking or Mountain Bike Trips
Being set in the middle of farmland, there is plenty of nature and countryside to see. We have two countryside walks that are very safe and at a comfortable level for all to enjoy. There’s the option to jog if you prefer a tougher workout but the walks are lovely for active recovery. You are also free to use the resident mountain bikes if you want to explore further.

Jungle Trail
Take a walk through the amazing jungle foliage to a hidden waterfall and take a dip in the cool waters! Join the resident yoga teacher for a guided meditation as you sit beneath the tumbling water.

Sunday Gym Excursions
Everyone looks forward to the Sunday rest day! There are many beautiful places to visit in Phetchabun and on Sunday, it’s time to explore. It could be the stunning Nong Pye Lake, one of Phetchabun’s largest set deep in the valley with beautiful panoramic views. Take a raft out and relax, swim, fish, and, if you’d like refreshments, it’s not a problem, simply wave a flag and you can order the most delicious food and drinks delivered to your raft. Sapailo Temple is another lovely location for a trip out with its pretty gardens and caves to explore or how about a trip to the local hot spring baths. We always try to fit in a cultural trip to meet our English-speaking Monk and learn the teachings of Buddhism and techniques for Buddhist meditation.

How to get there

Phetchabun is around a five hour drive North from Thailand’s capital, Bangkok. After arriving at Bangkok International Airport, there are two ways to get to the gym:

            1. Private pick up – 2900 THB. A driver will be waiting for you at airport arrivals and will bring you directly to the camp.
            2. First-Class Bus – Approx. 300-900 THB. Catch the first-class bus from Mochit Bus Station to Phetchabun. To get to Mochit Bus Station from BKK airport you can take a taxi, metro or skytrain. It will take about an hour.

Why Book With Us?

Hi, I’m Nikki and I started South East Asia Backpacker in 2008 after my own first solo backpacking trip! My vision was to create a travel diary for everyone, a place for travellers to share their experiences from the road. After backpacking and writing about Southeast Asia for over 10 years, I saw the opportunity to provide backpackers with the kind of experiences that I’d treasured myself in the region!

Today, there is so much choice, but there are a lot of poor-quality tours and companies that offer mediocre experiences with little care for the environment. I wanted to create a selection of the best tours and activities to help backpackers avoid scams and dodgy tour companies.

Today, I run this website with my partner, Dave, from Spain, where we live with our energetic two-year-old daughter, Evie. All of the bookable activities that you will find on this website have been vetted by a member of our team and we have a friendly relationship with the operator. There are real humans behind South East Asia Backpacker and we are passionate about sustainable travel and development in Southeast Asia.

We are committed to helping travellers at every stage of the journey and understand that plans can change which is why we offer a full discount on the deposit up to 72 hours before the start of your trip, no questions asked. We offer advice on flights, visas, itineraries, hostels, backpacks, packing and more!

If you have any questions about our business or any of the tours that we provide, feel free to contact me on Whatsapp.

Trainers

BALL: Ball hails from Pattaya where he started training at the Fairtex gym at the age of 9.  Before graduating from Phetchabun Sports University he was selected as their ambassador because of his varied skills.  He is adept in a range of sports, including soccer and tennis, but his passion is Muay Thai.  He has been in 56 fights.  He is known for his strong technique and his high strong kicks.  People gravitate to his calm and friendly demeanor.

BEE: Bee is one of our home grown fighters, and has been training at Battle Conquer Gym since the age of 9. While his fighter name is Pet Tai, referees tend to refer to him as Hitman.  They are not fooled by his sweet face as they know him to be a killer in the ring, particularly skilled in elbow technique. He has had 58 fights (winning 34 times), and is somewhat famous at the Nakhon Sawan Stadium, one of the biggest venues in the area. He can be bashful, but is very playful and a delight to be around.

BEY: Bey is one of our masters, with 128 fights under his belt (75 wins), and all at the tender age of 22.  He has multiple championships in Bangkok, at both the Lumpini and Rajadamnern stadiums, and was once light weight champion in Chiang Mai.  He is known for being quick in the ring, and will coach you to be the same as he gets you powered up and fight ready. Trying to punch Bey will be one of the hardest challenges you face!

GAME: With 200 fights under his belt, and 145 wins, Game is a highly expert coach.  In fact, he has himself trained two fighters through to championship wins.  After he was named Champion of North Thailand, he traveled to China where he taught Muay Thai for a year.  While he has the skills of an expert champion, his gift is always making people feel good about their workouts, even beginners.

JACKS: Training since the age of 12, Jacks has fought in Bangkok in both the Lumpini and Rajadamnern stadiums, once winning the championship at the latter.  All told he has been in 300 fights.  He spent three years in China, teaching Muay Thai and learning Chinese, before returning to Thailand to join us at Battle Conquer Gym.  He is soft spoken and a caring gentle warrior.

JAD: Jad has been fighting for over 30 years, and has racked up 360 fights. Included in this count is winning the light weight championship in North Thailand.  To expand his skills further Jad traveled to Myanmar where he fought and won in Muay Kaad Chuek, a bare knuckles form of boxing native to that country.  Before coming to Battle Conquer Gym Jad opened a gym in his home town where he taught young kids to fight.  Jad is tireless, and while he will push you to your limits, he is known around here for how encouraging he is.

LUK: Luk, another native of Battle Conquer Gym, has been training here since the age of 12.  He has 45 fights to his name (28 wins), and once earned the title of Light Weight Champion at Phitsanulok. He has expert technique, particularly adept with his knees and elbows.  But he also has a secret weapon in the ring, he disarms his opponents with his broad and unceasing smile. He is full of energy, a wonderful jokester, and loves teaching.

PEPO: Pepo is our youngest trainer, but don’t let that fool you.  At 17 he has already been fighting for 10 years, and has fought in 30 matches.  He started his training in Pattaya and won a belt in Sattahip. His kicks in particular are acrobatic, and it is fun to watch him as he flies through the air.  Let him teach you how to do the same.  Pepo is quiet and gentle and a particularly good trainer for beginners.

QUAN: Quan has been in the ring 57 times and won 32 fights.  Among these fights is premiering at Saraburi stadium, one of the largest in Thailand.  He recently returned to Battle Conquer after a few months absence and due to his wonderfully welcoming attitude to all guests he was greeted heartily upon his return.  He is strong, fast and can adapt to all levels.

YO: Yo, one of our “always smiling” trainers has been fighting for over 25 years.  He is proficient in several forms of boxing, including western boxing – which makes him a very popular teacher among our guests who want to focus on this.  He’s won both a golden medal and a silver medal in western boxing, and was a contestant to join Thailand’s Olympic team.  Of course, he excels at Muay Thai as well.  Guests love his happy spirit as well as his excellent technique.

  2. I’ve been here twice and I’ll be coming more! This place is hidden away from the hustle and bustle of cities in the plains of Phetchabun. I loved the focus it gave me to my trainings, which was also top-notch. The community here is amazing – like-minded folks tying to improve their health with the support of friendly trainers pushing boundaries, but also having fun at the same time.
