We truly believe that our online community is the most helpful anywhere on the internet. When used correctly, it serves as an invaluable resource for backpackers and provides a platform where travellers can make meaningful connections.

To help you get the most out of this group, please take a few minutes to familiarise yourself with the rules (see below).

How To Use Our Facebook Group

Before posting a question in the group, please:

  1. Check our FAQ page
  2. Search the group for previous answers
  3. Check what Google says

This group is the place for you to ask all of your burning travel questions. However, before you post, we ask that you please check out our FAQ page as you may find your question has already been answered.

Although we don’t permit group members to respond with the phrase “Google it”, the world’s largest search engine could be a good place to start with your query… For example, fact-based Q&A’s belong in the remit of Google. Questions such as ‘What airlines fly to Bangkok from Sydney?’ or “How long is the visa on arrival for Thailand?” can easily be answered using a Google search.

Even though you will find endless opinions on Google, the Facebook group is great for getting personal recommendations from a  varied group of people. Questions like ‘Where is everybody’s favourite place to eat in KL?’ and “Does anyone have experience of using this particular tour company?” are great questions to ask in the group.

Note: This group is set to “private”. If you tag a friend who isn’t in the group, they won’t see it. If you think they’ll find the group useful, invite them! (And be sure to tell them to answer the entry questions).

What Kinds Of Posts And Comments Are Not Allowed In The Group?

Bloggers, vloggers and influencers: Sorry, but you’re not allowed to share your content in this group, no matter how helpful you think it might be. Invitations to follow social media accounts will be deleted. Anyone repeatedly overlooking these rules will be removed from the group entirely.

Tour guides/operators: You are not allowed to promote your own, or anybody else’s business in the group. This includes the sending of  DMs.

We do not allow anyone to spam our group. That includes bloggers, YouTubers and tour guides. This helps to keep the community a productive space for everyone.

Disclaimer: Although the group can be a useful place for travel discussion, it’s important to remember that with a huge community, comes a wealth of opinions. We urge travellers to seek out information from official sources, for example, tourism boards, embassies, health providers.

Facebook Rules

1. Read the FAQs and SEARCH the group before posting

We want to keep our Facebook community a useful and constructive resource for all. We will not allow duplicate questions to pepper our group. Please use the Facebook search function to see whether your question has already been answered previously.

2. Keep the community a positive place

There is enough negativity on the internet without our help. Having a different opinion to somebody else is fine but please be considerate with how you voice it. This is especially important in the pandemic era. Posts should not contain offensive language or swear words that could upset others.

3. “Google it” is not a helpful response

The group is a great place to hear opinions from other travellers and this is what many backpackers are hoping to get when they post a question. They do not need to be met with unhelpful responses like “Google it” (although it goes without saying this should be the first port of call).

4. No hate speech or bullying

Bullying of any kind is not tolerated. Degrading comments pertaining to race, religion, culture, sexual orientation, gender or identity will result in your removal from the group.

This group is for travel and backpacking enthusiasts only. It is not the place to come if you want to troll people or look for a date. Our Facebook community is a safe space and we will not have members jeopardise that.

5. No selling/advertising/PMs/Instagram links

All of the above are forbidden in our group. If you are caught advertising or sending personal messages with commercial intent, you will be removed from the group.

If you run a travel-related business in Southeast Asia and would like to work with us with a view to sell your tours/activities through our booking platform, please email bookings@southeastasiabackpacker.com for more information.

6. No posting affiliate links

Managing this group requires a large time commitment from our team. As such, the only affiliate links allowed in this group are our own. Any revenue generated from the use of these links goes directly to funding this website and managing our group. If you have a link for something that you’ve never seen us share (search the group to find out first), tag an admin and ask permission to share yours. Failure to do this will result in the link being removed.

7. No self-promotion

This includes personal travel blogs, social media handles, other Facebook groups and YouTube links. We welcome and support content creators in many ways, please see here if you’d like to collaborate with us!

8. Remember, our group is not your doctor

Many travellers want to seek reassurance when they have medical scares on the road. While moral support may help to raise your morale, please remember that this group is not a source of reputable medical advice.

9. Report offensive comments/rule breaking

We want this group to be a safe space for everyone. If you observe any rule-breaking or offensive comments, please report them using the official channels for the admins to manage. Please do not follow up with PMs to the admins. Thank you for helping us to keep the community a productive and positive place!

10. No sensationalised news stories

Unless the news story contains facts that are of particular use to the backpacker, we will not allow the posting of gossipy or fear-mongering articles. Please note, we can not be held accountable for the accuracy of news articles shared in our group.

11. Respect the admin’s privacy

Please respect our work/life boundaries and do not private message the admins of the Facebook group. Messages often go into our spam folders so we don’t see them. If you have a question, see our FAQ page or ask in the group. Answers from a wide range of travellers are bound to be more useful than one viewpoint anyway!

12. Do not post booking enquiries in the group

If you have a question about one of the trips we sell on our website, we’d love to hear from you. However, with so many questions going into the group each day, it is easy for us to miss them on Facebook. Please send any booking enquiries to bookings@southeastasiabackpacker.com.
