Revealed! The Winner of our Flashlight Photography Competition and Front Cover!

We were overwhelmed by the response we had to our recent Photography Competition. Not only would the winner gain prime position on the front cover of our magazine, they would win a place on the fantastic Flashlight Photography Expedition taking place in November in Chiang Mai!

With so many incredible photos sent in (and more than a few dodgy snaps!), it was a tough choice!

The Winning Photograph – Our Front Cover!

Finally, we decided on this beautiful shot taken by Sergey Bochenkov in remote Ha Giang Province, Vietnam.

Competition WinnerHappy cyclists in Ha Giang Province, Vietnam

Says Sergey, who is originally from Russia but now living in Hanoi: “The photo was taken during a bicycle trip in the mountains of this poor, yet stunning area of Vietnam. The scenery was just fantastic; beautiful landscapes, colourful local villages, everyone smiling. I didn’t get a good shot of the cyclists the first try, so I turned back and started to overtake them again and again to get a good position. Believe me, it was quite a ride! I was changing the lens at the same time as riding the bicycle. I don’t think I’d be able to repeat this acrobatic trick again! I finally found a position to shoot, and right after I did, the crowd turned left to the side road, so I had captured them just in time!”

The Runner Up – Our Editorial Photo!

We also loved this photo by Andy Faulk of a Thai monk, taken in Pai, northern Thailand. The photo is printed in our magazine this issue accompanying the editorial. Says Andy “After a day riding in the sun through the Pai valley of northern Thailand, I pulled my rented motorbike off next to a roadside vendor. I purchased my litre of water and looked up. This lovely monk had appeared from nowhere and was staring intently at me. I smiled and I asked if I could make a photo. After one snap, he walked on and left me to my water and overheating motorbike.”

Andy is an American expat living and working in Seoul, South Korea. He is a teacher and a freelance photographer and you can see more of his amazing shots on his photography website.
