Inspired by a particularly special episode of Top Gear, hundreds of keen backpackers add the Hai Van Pass in Vietnam to their to-do list. According to Jeremy Clarkson, the 20-kilometre mountain pass is “one of the best coast roads in the world” and we would have to agree. Connecting Da Nang to Lang Co in Hue, this must-see mountain road has become a backpacker rite of passage!

Two Ways to do the Hai Van Pass Motorbike Tour
On the Hai Van Pass & Beyond Tour, there are two ways to experience the tour…
Ride the Motorbike Yourself – If you’re a confident riding a motorbike yourself then you can join this tour and ride yourself! Of course, we will provide the motorbike as part of the tour and there is no additional cost. If you choose to do this, you will need an International Motorcycle Driving Licence.

What’s the Hai Van Pass Tour Like?
A Taster of the Hai Van Pass & Coast Tour (Hue to Hoi An)
The tour incorporates a little bit of everything, from amazing views, to ancient and modern historical sites, hidden beaches, a delicious local lunch and bags of adrenaline!
The adventure starts out of the busy city of Hue and heads down the smaller village roads on the outskirts of the city. The first leg of the journey passes through the ‘City of Ghosts’, an eerie stretch of road lined with numerous elaborate graveyards.
After that, we’ll stop off at a duck farm for a short while, which offers a good excuse to shake our legs and snap some photos of the local farming scenery.
After stopping for a strong Vietnamese coffee to give us some energy, we’ll drive towards Lang Co Beach around a stunning lagoon. We’ll then take you to a pristine stretch of beach near the village of Lang Co that barely anyone knows about!
Here we’ll enjoy a delicious lunch (of local seafood if you like) and you’ll have the opportunity to go for a swim.
After lunch, we’ll begin our climb up the legendary Hai Van Pass. As the roads snake higher into the mountains, the views will open up, and through the clouds you’ll start to glimpse the incredible scenery for which the pass is so famous for.
We’ll stop at the summit of the Hai Van Pass to appreciate the amazing coastal views that extend from the north to the south of Vietnam and out over the ocean. It’s a breathtaking spot of great historical and cultural significance and one of the most beautiful in all of Vietnam.
After snapping some photos, we’ll begin our descent down the mountain which is just as exciting as the ascent! Once you get to the bottom of the mountain, we’ll start our journey towards Hoi An, driving past local fishing boats along the way. We’ll see the traditional fishing nets and smile at the local fisher-people who have made their living here for hundreds of years.
You’ll arrive in Hoi An just in time for sunset! We’ll drop you off at the doorway to your hostel and your bags will be waiting for you.
