Overview:
Hike up an active volcano for sunrise, admire Indonesia’s most iconic waterfall and marvel at electric blue flames!
Over three action-packed days, this tour will take you all over East Java to see the island’s most spectacular natural wonders. You’ll begin by hiking to Tumpak Sewu Waterfall. Known as ‘The Waterfall of a Thousand Waterfalls’, its numerous cascades tumble 200 metres over a cliff face creating a curtain of water amidst lush tropical jungle.
On the following day you’ll watch sunrise over the volcanic landscape of the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park before hiking to the summit of Mount Bromo to stare down into its smoky depths. Day three begins at midnight for a short hike up Mount Ijen to witness the extraordinary blue flame phenomenon and watch sunrise over the world’s largest acidic lake!
Itinerary:
Day 1: Pickup Surabaya or Malang – Tumpak Sewu – Guesthouse Bromo
6 am: Pick up in Surabaya
8 am: Pick up in Malang
10 am: In Tumpak, meet & greet guide and trek from top to bottom of Tumpak Sewu Waterfall (3 hours)
1 pm: Rest
2 pm: Depart Tumpak for your guesthouse in Bromo. Optional stop for lunch at local restaurant
6 pm: Arrive at guesthouse
Evening: Optional evening out for dinner at local restaurant
Day 2: Bromo – Bondowoso
2 am: Wake and begin journey by jeep up to Bromo viewpoint
4 am: Arrive at Bromo viewpoint and watch sunrise
6 am: Return to jeep to continue journey to Bromo crater
7.30 am: Hike up to Bromo crater rim
9 am: Depart Bromo and return to village for breakfast
11 am: Travel by car to Bondowoso. Optional stop for lunch at local restaurant
2.30 pm: Check into guesthouse
Evening: Optional evening out for dinner at local restaurant
Day 3: Bondowoso – Ijen – drop off Ketapang – Ferry – Gilimanuk, Bali
12 am: Begin journey to Ijen at midnight (2 hours driving)
2 am: Begin hike up Mount Ijen
3 am: Arrive at blue flame viewing spot
4 am: Continue to summit to watch sunrise
6.30 am: Descend Mount Ijen
8 am: Depart Ijen for Ketapang harbor
9 am: Arrive in Ketapang harbor for ferry to Bali
Other Drop-Off Point Options:
- Back to Surabaya (additional cost of 100,000 IDR)
- Transfer to Ubud (additional cost of 700,000 IDR per car accommodating up to 4 people)
Accommodation:
Two night’s accommodation is included in local family-run guesthouses, which helps to support the local community. Rooms are basic but private with hot water and private bathrooms.
Food:
A filling breakfast is included each morning. Vegetarian and vegan options are available on request.
Lunch and dinner are not included, but stops will be made between destinations so that the group can purchase lunch. There will be local restaurants close to the guesthouses where you can buy dinner in the evening.
Location:
The tour begins in either Surabaya or Malang in East Java and ends in Gilimanuk in west Bali.

How to Get There:
Both Surabaya and Malang are accessible by train from Yogyakarta (around 7 hours and 6 hours respectively).
Surabaya is also served by an international airport. Flights from Jakarta take around 1.5 hours or 1 hour from Bali.

Payment:
To reserve your place on this activity you will need to pay a deposit online with South East Asia Backpacker via credit or debit card. The remaining balance will be paid directly to the operator, Opsi Liburan, by bank transfer 5 days in advance of the tour. Opsi Liburan will send payment instructions upon confirmation of your booking.
