1-Day Itinerary: Kuang Si Waterfall Trek from Laung Prabang

  • Distance: Total trekking distance is 9km (5.5 miles).
  • Difficulty: Medium difficulty, slippery when wet, but mainly flat. There is a rocky section of approximately 20 minutes up and down a small hill.

We’ll start from Luang Prabang and then drive to a nearby valley southeast of Luang Prabang. We’ll arrive at Long Lao Village where we’ll begin our hiking tour! Before trekking, we can explore the life and culture of this village where Khamu and Hmong people live. We’ll also see the work of our Fair Trek project, a beautiful clay-built bungalow used for overnight tours to experience local village life and culture.

We’ll continue trekking into the mountainous Lao countryside of Luang Prabang. Hiking along the jungle trail you will pass by rice fields, orchards, and vegetable gardens and before reaching the forested mountains with quite wild jungle scenery and some graded climbs.

In the afternoon you will arrive at the crystal clear Kuang Si Waterfall. A beautiful forested route leads you to the end of your trek and your final reward! The welcoming and refreshing pools of Kuang Si Waterfall await you, where we will have plenty of time to relax and swim in the cooling water!

While in the Tad Kuang Si Waterfall nature reserve, you can visit the Kuang Si Bear Rescue Sanctuary. At the visitors centre, you can learn more about the Asian sun and moon bears and find out about the Free the Bears protection program. You are welcome to support the project with a donation or by buying a real “Free The Bears” T-Shirt.

After that, you can visit the new Lao Buffalo Dairy that produces delicious dairy products, such as the amazing local homemade ice-cream which you can try! Enjoy life on the farm and interact with the buffalos, pigs, chickens and cute rabbits! We return to Luang Prabang in the late afternoon, around 5 pm.

Why Book With Us?

Hi, I’m Nikki. I started this website in 2008 after my first solo backpacking trip to Asia. A trip that changed my life. My vision was to create a travel diary for everyone – a place for all travellers to share their experiences. After living in Southeast Asia for over 10 years, I saw the opportunity to provide backpackers with the kind of experiences that I’d treasured myself in the region.

Today, there is so much choice, but there are a lot of poor-quality tours and companies that offer mediocre experiences with little care for the environment. I wanted to create a selection of the best tried and tested activities to help backpackers avoid scams and unwanted experiences.

Today, I run this website with my partner, Dave, from Spain, where we live with our two young daughters, Eve and baby Rose. All of the bookable activities that you find on this website have been vetted by a member of our team and we have a friendly relationship with the operator. There are real humans behind South East Asia Backpacker and we are passionate about sustainable travel and tourism in Southeast Asia.

We’re committed to helping travellers at every stage of the journey and are happy to answer your questions pre, during and post travels. We understand that plans can change which is why we offer a full refund on the deposit up to 72 hours before the start of your trip, no questions asked. We offer advice on flights, visas, itineraries, hostels, backpacks, packing and more!

If you have any questions about our business or any of the tours that we provide, feel free to contact me on Whatsapp.
