Overview:

Learn to surf at Bali’s only beachfront surf camp! Set among lush rice paddies and directly on the sandy, palm-fringed beach in Medewi, Brown Sugar provides a peaceful, tropical retreat for surfers looking to catch some waves away from the crowded spots of Kuta and Canggu.

With world-class waves and tropical waters, Bali is a dream destination for a surf holiday, and Brown Sugar is ideally located for beginner surfers. The camp is just steps from the nearest surf spot, a learner-friendly beach break. Nearby are plenty of other spots suitable for more experienced surfers, including the longest wave in Bali! Start your surf journey with Brown Sugar’s learn-to-surf package and you’ll be riding your very first wave in no time!

Surf sessions and surf spots:

Packages include two surf sessions per day between Monday and Friday and one session per day on Saturday and Sunday. Sessions are two-hours long. The time you go out is likely to vary from day to day based on the surf forecast.

There is a beginner-friendly break directly in front of Brown Sugar Surf Camp, making it the perfect location for learners. Another nearby spot for beginners and intermediates is Sumbul Beach Break, which is just a few minutes’ walk along the beach from the camp. Intermediates and advanced surfers will surely be stoked to ride Bali’s legendary longest left at Medewi Point, a short drive away.

Brown Sugar’s knowledgeable surf guides know a dozen other first-class surf spots within a 30-minute drive of the camp and will always take you to the best location according to the day’s swell conditions and your surf level.

Accommodation:

Accommodation is included in the package price. Choose between Brown Sugar’s Balinese bungalows or one of the deluxe villas.

  • FAN ROOMS: The Balinese Bungalows, fitted with fans, are made from sustainable, natural materials, including coconut and bamboo. These traditional materials have been used in Asia for thousands of years and are perfectly suited to the climate.
  • AC ROOMS: Brown Sugar’s Deluxe Villas provide air-conditioning and are designed to provide comfort and a laid back environment.

Both options have either twin or queen beds and private bathrooms, and all rooms are equipped with board racks and outdoor showers for rinsing off salt water.

Food:

A delicious and healthy daily breakfast is included with all packages. Choose from either a local breakfast or a Western-style breakfast, such as tasty smoothie bowls, any style of eggs, yummy pancakes or delicious tropical fruits.

Guests can also enjoy lunch and dinner (not included) at the camp’s seaview restaurant, Blue Fin, which serves fine Indonesian cuisine and Western dishes. A weekly Beach BBQ is also included in the price a perfect opportunity to socialise with your fellow guests and enjoy some tasty local food. Vegans and vegetarians are well catered for at Brown Sugar.

Board rental:

Board rental is included in the package price. Guests are welcome to bring their own board. Brown Sugar has its own ding-clinic providing fast board repair at reasonable rates.

Location:

Brown Sugar is located directly on the beautiful black-sand beach of Medewi on Bali’s west coast. Medewi is an idyllic fishing village that has, so-far, escaped the rapid development of many other places on the island. With few tourists, deserted beaches, and a mellow mood, Medewi is a breath of fresh air for travellers who enjoy the quieter life, and ideal for surfers who like their line ups uncrowded. There are great local restaurants and a food market as well as a handful of western cafes and eateries catering to the surfers that come here seeking surf and a laid back vibe.

How to get there:

Medewi is located around three hours from Bali International Airport by car, or two hours from Canggu. Free airport transfers are included for bookings for one week or longer.

Alternatively, Grab taxis are a convenient way to reach Medewi from elsewhere in Bali and it’s also possible to take a public bus from Denpasar (Bali’s capital) to Medewi.

Other activities and facilities:

Brown Sugar Surf Camp features a swimming pool surrounded by a tropical garden, perfect for either relaxing or practising your turtle-roll or duck-diving skills!

The beachfront lounge area is a beautiful space to relax and recharge by the ocean, or enjoy a drink and one of Bali’s beautiful sunsets. You can also indulge in a traditional Balinese massage in the camp’s onsite Javanese Joglo (a traditional wooden house).

Brown Sugar also arranges day trips on Sundays (additional cost), a great opportunity to enjoy some downtime with fellow guests and discover the island of Bali. Outings may include a visit to historical temples, waterfalls, traditional markets, or diving and snorkelling trips.

  • What’s the maximum number of surfers per instructor during sessions? For beginners, there is a maximum of three learners per instructor. With intermediates, the ratio is a maximum of four students per instructor.
  • What should I bring? Yourself and your swimwear! That’s pretty much it. Brown Sugar’s comprehensive package has you covered and means you don’t need to worry about bringing the big things (like a surfboard!) or the little things (such as a towel). They even provide rash vests, and you definitely won’t need a wetsuit as the tropical water averages a warm 28oC!

Why Book With Us?

Hi, I’m Nikki and I started South East Asia Backpacker in 2008 after my own first solo backpacking trip! My vision was to create a travel diary for everyone, a place for travellers to share their experiences from the road. After backpacking and writing about Southeast Asia for over 10 years, I saw the opportunity to provide backpackers with the kind of experiences that I’d treasured myself in the region!

Today, there is so much choice, but there are a lot of poor-quality tours and companies that offer mediocre experiences with little care for the environment. I wanted to create a selection of the best tours and activities to help backpackers avoid scams and dodgy tour companies.

Today, I run this website with my partner, Dave, from Spain, where we live with our energetic two-year-old daughter, Evie. All of the bookable activities that you will find on this website have been vetted by a member of our team and we have a friendly relationship with the operator. There are real humans behind South East Asia Backpacker and we are passionate about sustainable travel and development in Southeast Asia.

We are committed to helping travellers at every stage of the journey and understand that plans can change which is why we offer a full discount on the deposit up to 72 hours before the start of your trip, no questions asked. We offer advice on flights, visas, itineraries, hostels, backpacks, packing and more!

If you have any questions about our business or any of the tours that we provide, feel free to contact me on Whatsapp.
