Why Book With Us?

Hi, I’m Nikki. I started this website in 2008 after my first solo backpacking trip to Asia. A trip that changed my life. My vision was to create a travel diary for everyone – a place for all travellers to share their experiences. After living in Southeast Asia for over 10 years, I saw the opportunity to provide backpackers with the kind of experiences that I’d treasured myself in the region.

Today, there is so much choice, but there are a lot of poor-quality tours and companies that offer mediocre experiences with little care for the environment. I wanted to create a selection of the best tried and tested activities to help backpackers avoid scams and unwanted experiences.

Today, I run this website with my partner, Dave, from Spain, where we live with our two young daughters, Eve and baby Rose. All of the bookable activities that you find on this website have been vetted by a member of our team and we have a friendly relationship with the operator. There are real humans behind South East Asia Backpacker and we are passionate about sustainable travel and tourism in Southeast Asia.

We’re committed to helping travellers at every stage of the journey and are happy to answer your questions pre, during and post travels. We understand that plans can change which is why we offer a full refund on the deposit up to 72 hours before the start of your trip, no questions asked. We offer advice on flights, visas, itineraries, hostels, backpacks, packing and more!

If you have any questions about our business or any of the tours that we provide, feel free to contact me on Whatsapp.

Q & A

Ask a question
If i cancel 70 hours before the activity starts, do I still need to pay to the operator? Or do I only lose my deposit? Senne asked on 05/12/2024

Hi Senne, you would only lose your deposit if you cancelled less than 72 hours before the activity starts. (To book you need to pay a deposit which is fully refundable up until 72 hours before the start of your tour.) For this particular slow boat tour, you only need to pay the operator the remaining amount on the actual day of the tour, so you would not lose the remaining money by cancelling. It's important to note that other tours on this platform have different rules regarding when the operator needs to receive the remaining payment. If you need to cancel for any reason, just email or Whatsapp us and we can refund you, no questions asked.

What is the cost of a family (2 adults and 2 children) for the Luxury Accommodation? Eva Konecsny asked on 25/11/2024

Hi Eva, so at the luxury accommodation (Le Grande Pak Beng), you would have to get 2 separate rooms for 4 people. Price per room (2 people) is $390 USD so X 2 would be $780 USD. This price includes the cruise and the room. Any more questions just let me know!

Exceeded all out expectations.. The guide was very good, the boat itself was beautiful ..spacious and very clean with great loos! The food was excellent and the transfers to our hotels in Pakbang and Luang Prubang were all included and easy. The river journey was stunning.. we only wished for even more days. We enjoyed the visits to villages and cave of Buddhas .. the only small change I would wish for is an extra 10 minutes at the buddha cave steps were very long and steep meaning only 5 minutes in the cave for us as an older slower couple. Highly recommend staying in Huay Xai the night before as we did ..it is lovely and to avoid stress of early morning border crossing whichnis outside of Nagi control of course

We are a family of 4 (with 2 kids, 8 and 10) and we had a great time during this trip. It's slow travel but the scenery is perfect to spend time looking around. Our guide has been great, with answers for a lot of specific knowledge about this part of Asia. Also, the hotel selected for the mid-journey has been great, with a swimming pool and a nice view for sunset. I would recommend this tour to family and friends who want to travel in this region.

  2. Boat was super. Guide was super. Hotel was extraordinary. Booking was easy. Perfect solution for a family with kids (9&11y). Much more expensive than the regular slowboat but good value for money and very reasonable. Thank you .

  5. We played with the idea for a long time before taking the leap on this trip as it is rather pricey compared to the local longboat trip they offer. After seeing the comparison in boat, we were extremely happy we chose to upgrade with Nagi of Mekong. Our guide, Tune, was incredible. His English was brilliant, his manner and hospitality was second to none, happy to answer all of our annoying questions too! The facilities on the boat couldn’t be better, comfy seats, lovely prepared food, even the bathroom was lovely. Doing the journey this way was completely invaluable as it allowed us to experience the views in a comfortable way, and to make stops too.

Something that cannot be missed off this review – we would not have boooked using South East Asia Backpacker if it wasn’t for Nicki’s attentive guidance that we received upon enquiry. No question too stupid for her to answer, troubleshooting everything as we needed.

Thank you very much for making the entry into Laos seamless and incredibly enjoyable.

    Sam
