Vietnamese is the official language of Vietnam and has Thai, Khmer and Chinese influences. The vast majority of the population (around 85–90%) speak Vietnamese as their first language. There are also several minority ethnic groups across the country who maintain their own languages.
As a traveller, you’ll be able to get by using English. However, locals will appreciate attempts to communicate in Vietnamese, and you may find knowing some basic Vietnamese phrases will come in useful if you want to get off the tourist path.
Learning a little of the language is a great way to engage more deeply with a place and its people. The more you understand the richer your experience is likely to be, but even simply mastering the words for ‘hello’ and ‘thank you’ can go a long way to enhance your travel experience.

A Note on Vietnamese Pronunciation
Vietnamese is a tonal language. This means that the meaning of a word is determined by the pitch at which it’s spoken. The same word can have several different meanings depending on the way it is pronounced.
Tonal languages can be tricky for Westerners to master. English and other European languages don’t use tone to differentiate between meanings of words (but can be used for emphasis or to convey emotion). This can lead to faux pas and confusion.
