Half-Day Climbing Course – Ideal For New Climbers!

Climbing Day Begins: 9:30 AM
Return to Adamโ€™s Climbing School: 1:00 PM

This introduction to climbing class will usually take place at ‘Sleeping Wall‘ located 15 minutes from Vang Vieng on the banks of the beautiful Nam Song River. Sleeping Wall has over 31 established beginner to intermediate routes that will challenge any level of climber. The trek to the cliff โ€œthe approachโ€ is the easiest in the area and can be managed in flip flops.

The course will begin with instruction on climbing equipment, climbing knots, belay devices and safe belaying techniques and procedures. You will be allowed to belay a lead climber (instructor) who will set up a top rope for you.

You will begin with an easy warm-up climb and progress upwards in climbing grade typically completing 4 – 6 climbs of increasing difficulty before returning to Vang Vieng. Your climbing guide will offer instruction and guidance in hand and foot placement (Beta) as needed. This can be extremely helpful to a beginning climber just learning how to read the rock.

Full-Day Climbing Course – Perfect For Beginners!

Climbing Day Begins: 9:30 AM
Return to Adamโ€™s Climbing School: 5:00 PM

This full-day introduction climbing class will usually take place at ‘Sleeping Wall/Secret Canyon‘ or ‘PhaDaeng‘ located 15 and 20 minutes, respectively from Vang Vieng. Sleeping Wall is located next to the Nam Song River and has over 31 established beginner/intermediate routes that will test any level of climber.

PhaDaeng is located east of town heading towards ‘Blue Lagoon‘. This approach is steep and has very sharp rocks, therefore it is better attempted with good hiking boots or trainers. This location receives more sunlight throughout the day which is great for photos but it makes sunscreen a necessity. This site offers a great view of the valley below and very long climbs, up to 25 meters. 15 Intermediate routes are currently available at this site.

The course will begin with instruction on top-rope climbing, belay & climbing techniques, equipment use and safety measures. You will begin with a warm-up climb and progress upwards in climbing grade over the course of the morning. Your climbing guide will offer guidance in hand and foot placement as required. This can help a beginner learn to read rock.

After completing 4 to 6 climbs of increasing difficulty you will take a lunch break with a meal that is included in your tour price. After enjoying a nice meal, the afternoon will be filled with more climbing and additional practice with belay concepts.

Why Book With Us?

Hi, I’m Nikki. I started this website in 2008 after my first solo backpacking trip to Asia. A trip that changed my life. My vision was to create a travel diary for everyone – a place for all travellers to share their experiences. After living in Southeast Asia for over 10 years, I saw the opportunity to provide backpackers with the kind of experiences that I’d treasured myself in the region.

Today, there is so much choice, but there are a lot of poor-quality tours and companies that offer mediocre experiences with little care for the environment. I wanted to create a selection of the best tried and tested activities to help backpackers avoid scams and unwanted experiences.

Today, I run this website with my partner, Dave, from Spain, where we live with our two young daughters, Eve and baby Rose. All of the bookable activities that you find on this website have been vetted by a member of our team and we have a friendly relationship with the operator. There are real humans behind South East Asia Backpacker and we are passionate about sustainable travel and tourism in Southeast Asia.

We’re committed to helping travellers at every stage of the journey and are happy to answer your questions pre, during and post travels. We understand that plans can change which is why we offer a full refund on the deposit up to 72 hours before the start of your trip, no questions asked. We offer advice on flights, visas, itineraries, hostels, backpacks, packing and more!

If you have any questions about our business or any of the tours that we provide, feel free to contact me on Whatsapp.

Q & A

Ask a question
Do I get certificate after the course? And is there any course for lead climbing as well? Thank you Htoo Shwesin lin asked on 09/09/2024

Hi there! You won't receive a certificate after the half day or full day course. There is a lead climbing course coming soon, after the monsoon season. Please check back in October and we will have more details for you!

  1. The outing was great. We had 4 people and the two guides, so we were able to do quite a few climbs in a short period of time. Apple and Mik were fantastic guides. They were both very helpful and fun to spend the day with. I feel safe the entire time. For climbers new and experienced, this is a highly recommended activity in Vang Vieng. There is so much amazing limestone to climb on!

And thanks to South East Asia Backpacker. Nikki was very responsive and was able to get in touch with Adam for me when I had connection problems on my end.

  2. Really enjoyed my half day of climbing and thought it was good value for money. I learned about the basics of rope rope climbing/belaying from my instructor who spoke with good English. Our climb was thankfully in a nice shadowy area so it wasnโ€™t too hot either.

  3. Had a great morning climbing – mixed ability group of four. Our instructor, Sien, spoke good English and was very clear in his instructions. He was a great instructor! Very good value for money- you would enjoy this activity as a beginner or experienced climber

  4. We had a really great day. Adam and his stuff are very experienced climbers and they took good care of us. They explained everything, ensured our safety and adjusted the climbs to oneโ€™s ability and experience. We couldnโ€™t have wished for a better course.
