Spending the festive season on Koh Phangan was never going to be your average chill-out affair, but even for party-fiends like us, the mere thought of a massive three-stage rave-up on the January 2nd (yes, the second of January) seemed… well. A bit… much?
Could we handle it? Well, just a tiny peek at the lineup of Rhythm and Sands gave us our answer pretty sharpish: Hell, yes – we could. And was it worth it? Definitely!
With promises of techno and tech-house from Nakadia, house and progressive trance from Graham Gold, as well as all the island regulars boshing out everything from funky house to dubstep, we followed the basslines all the way down to Baan Tai Beach Village JUST in time to catch the headliner of the night on the main stage at midnight – Belgium’s very own NETSKY, who more than delivered with some of the dirtiest drum & bass we’d heard since arriving on the island.
Add to that the awesome sound-system, lasers, light shows and visuals; fire performances and hundreds of fellow dance enthusiasts going mental (what New Year hangover?), only one realisation struck us (aside from the constant acknowledgements of ‘What A Tune!’) – and that was – ’Tired? Not anymore!’
Still, one of the best things about Rhythm and Sands is the fact that if you are tired, or hungry – then you’ve arguably found yourself at Koh Phangan’s optimum festival for indulging in some cuisine and chill-time (assuming, as we do, that you’re in no way ready to go home yet).
The Venue: THE BEACH VILLAGE, Baan Tai, Koh Phangan.
Nestled within a secluded but accessible beach venue amidst the palms of Baan Tai (think 200m of white sand with views of the surrounding islands), there’s a huge tropical pool at the centre of the main dancefloor, as well as the Electronic Lounge – your very own indoor nightclub on the beach, offering everything from deep to tech house, ice-cream cocktails, skittle vodka and cider on tap, gourmet pizza and grilled panini available all night, and a simply enormous cinema screen that will dazzle you with visuals till sunrise.
Finally, there’s the Open Soul Chill Out Park, where you can order from The Showroom (their gourmet international restaurant) whilst kicking back and taking in the local live talent – everything from Thai presentation and open mic.
So, you missed out on 2nd January? Don’t worry!
